I was at the Cupcake Royale on Capitol Hill the other day.... and really fell in love with the interior. A quick post on twitter, and soon I knew the designer! Domestic Architecture, an offshoot of Roy McMakin's sculpture and furniture design developed a really fantastic interior space that successfully integrates sculpture (not in the photo, but fantastic bent wire birds decorate one of the main walls), custom furniture, branding, and the overall space.
.
I've spent the afternoon looking through the rest of Domestic Architecture's site... The use of color is great, as is the treatment of the buildings as sculpture. The graphic nature of most of the designs is a testament to Roy's life as a sculptor and designer.
.
Most of these properties are private, but if you have the opportunity, definitely check out Cupcake Royale.

i&m

Sometimes the blogosphere is so cool... Who knows how long it would have taken me to come across these fantastic lights and tables by i&m if Jamie hadn't left a comment on one of my posts... Not only is their work fantastic, but its local! How great!

Graypants

These three objects by local architecture and design firm Graypants are really quite nice... and even green, too! The light fixture and scrap chairs (lowest picture) are made from leftover materials like cardboard and newspapers. The forms are pretty simple, but very successful... The corrugated cardboard gives off a very nice quality of light, and the chairs actually look comfortable! We should all keep an eye on this young design duo in the future!

Pecha Kucha and Polaroids

Last week a friend and I attended Seattle's latest Pecha Kucha... We didn't stay the entire time, mainly because it was so hot inside, but also partly because I wasn't completely taken with the material. Still, there was one slideshow that I found particularly interesting, not only for the content... but also because it opened my eyes to the fact that polaroids are disappearing! I'm very sad to say (although most of you probably already know) that Polaroid has stopped making cameras as of 2008 and as of 2010 will stop making film. I personally have very fond memories of childhood polaroids, and it really seemed like polaroid photography was making a comeback, so I'm very sad to see them go! I wonder if there will be a grassroots movement to save polaroids, similar to saving gocco.

Seattle's Modern List

I'm having some computer troubles at the moment, so posting might be sparse this week. In the mean time, check out the Modern List Seattle, brought to you by the same guys who do the Build Blog (Not to be confused with BLDG Blog).
.
Its an interesting resource for modern architecture, design, and local resources.

A Perfect Fall Evening

Tonight was a beautiful fall evening, one of the nicest I can remember in a long time. Growing up in Massachusetts, I've always had a special place in my heart for fall. I love the crisp air, clear sunny skies, apple picking, hay rides... the whole bit. Here is Seattle, I always feel like I miss out on the best part of fall. It seems like the weather turns immediately from a mild summer to a rainy winter. But for some reason, after the terrible summer we had, we've been graced with a fairly spectacular fall so far. Tonight was an especially great night. The air was a crisp as could be without being cold, the sun was shining until it set, and not a drop of rain fell after the afternoon drizzle.

On the first thursday of every month, the galleries and museums in Seattle keep their doors open a bit later and sponsor an art walk downtown. C and I took the opportunity to spend the evening wandering around Pioneer Square checking out the different galleries and I couldn't have asked for a better night out.

Below are a few of the pieces we saw while wandering around. Although the artwork was quite beautiful (overall), I was much more impressed by the buildings housing the galleries. Walking up and down the stairs of these old historic lofts was more entertaining to me than any of the artwork. I really wish that I had remembered to bring my camera as it was a perfect night for photography.

Susan Dory

Today I had the chance to visit the Winston Wachter Gallery while checking out a piece that had been selected for one of my office's projects. While there, I saw an amazing series of acrylics by Susan Dory... The image above doesn't really do them justice, you've got to check them out in person, but if you've got some expendable income and are in the Seattle area, I would absolutely recommend checking them out.
