The Interior Made it for me

I had previously seen images of this project, but they had all been exterior shots. While, I like the exterior, it is the images of the interior that really attract me.

How Embarrassing

So, the World Expo 2010 is taking place in Shanghai, and many of the world's best architects have contributed designs. Many countries have hired the best architects found in their own country, while others have ventured out beyond their borders... but most designs have something in common... trying to articulate the priorities and passions of their home country, exuding confidence and creativity. Of course, I say most because the US is one glaring exception. What does our pavilion say about us? We could be locate along any highway in any suburb. We value conformity and corporate culture (which we can directly link to many of the problems plaguing our nation). We don't really have any place for innovation or creativity and we certainly don't value our architects, which is why we hired a Canadian to design a metal panelled representation of an eagle (there is that lack of creativity and ingenuity again).

Very Frustrating. An expo is not an office park.

Village of Dancing Fish

The Village of Dancing Fish is a special needs housing project in Paju, South Korea by Byoung Soo Cho Architects. The adult living group home provides farmland for work as well as a village-like community. The buildings are grouped in order to provide individual spaces for the residents that can still be monitored by teachers... These clusters provide intimate 'neighborhoods' within the overall shared community. The plywood and steel structure and clean interior lines are interesting, but I think the big idea of a well designed community for the mentally disabled is even more exciting and impressive.

Weave Your Light

Even though these lights by Kwangho Lee are a little insane to put in your average home... they've got such a great dynamic energy that I just can't stop thinking about them.

Origami Chairs

I love these origami chairs by Jo Han-Yong from a student show in Seoul. Its always great to keep up with student work... so I really appreciate this post by This Time in Seoul. If you haven't checked it out, do so. Its not so much architecture related, as related to design in life, and specifically life abroad, but definitely worth a read.
